Was thinking about it. Sammy would be okay in 27C for 4h. The fish would probably also be okay, since tank temp is supposed to be ~28C, and the lights are off during the day.

Then we'd have another fancy-shmancy programmable thermostat to give to one of our friends.

I just have a (tiny tiny) concern about the security of the internet control. It would suck to get hacked, and have our house temp shoot between 35C and 12C.

The first thing through my mind was "Wait, if enough people sign up for that, I can get a bot to set all their thermostats to meat-locker temperatures in the middle of a heatwave, overwhelming the grid and TURNING CANADA OFF! BWAH HA HA HA!"

That's one of the Hydro programs I'd love to do, but as long as we have the dogs, we just can't. We have to keep the house cooler than I'd like in summer (the thermostat's set for 23c during the day, I believe - when I was living on my own, I had it set for 25C), because if it's any warmer, the dogs really suffer. Those 2C could be crucial for them, when they're inside a house (i.e. breezeless). Those double fur coats are brutally warm.

Setting it to 21C just so Hydro can move it up if they need to would be silly, though. *g*

(Mostly, I want to run AC for the dehumidifying properties, rather than for the cooling properties. There's very little that drives me as crazy as having to put on a sweater indoors because it's too cold.)

Yeah, I totally understand your concern there. Unless you want to shave your dogs, of course.

Have you got a programmable thermostat? If not, and if we sign up for this, we'll have a spare to give away.

Already have one, thanks! We got one last summer, when the AC was installed. It's a pretty base model (and certainly no fancy-schmancy setting it over the internet *g*) but it does do the job. It's not that much use in the summer, since we can't let it get to warm during the day, but it's great in winter.

A friend's father signed up for one of these deals and there was some fine print he missed and it actually cost him in the long run!

Just read carefully! (:

Was it utility control of A/C, or was it time-of-day metering? Time-of-day metering gives you lower-cost electricity evenings, weekends, and overnight, at the cost of higher-cost electricity during the peak hours (say, weekday afternoons).

Regardless, the admonition to read the fine print carefully is, of course, acknowledged.

The way it was sold to him, it was more of the control variety. I do not think that is what he got - however, never trust a sales person to know what they're selling you!

I'd totally take them up on time-of-day metering -- our washing machine even has a timer so we could run it at off-peak times.
