[Background] Very little is known about Rose's past. Not even if Rosemary is her real name, or if her hair and eye colours are natural. In 2007 she was either employed or forced by the Patriots to act as a spy. Her task was to go over the psyche profile of a soldier called Jack, and fashion herself into the image of his 'ideal woman', in appearance and personality. Her entire identity became a fabrication intended to make him fall in love with her. She staged a chance meeting with him in New York outside Federal Hall, where they had an argument about which building King Kong climbed in the movie. By a so-called coincidence they realised the next day they worked in the same military base. That evening they had their first date, and Jack soon fell in love with her.
Rose reported every detail of his life back to the Patriots. But gradually, she found herself falling in love with him, too. Their relationship was only perfect on the surface: she felt a great deal of guilt having to act as a spy, and over the fact Jack was in love with a character, not the real her. And Jack himself refused to open up to her, couldn't even share the basics of his past with her. He was haunted by it to the extent where they couldn't even share the same bed at night. When Rose forced her way into his room, Jack's reaction to this invasion of privacy was explosive: Rose said it was the first time he'd ever raised his hand against her.
Despite all that, they lived together for two years. Jack's first field mission came in 2009, in an offshore oil clean-up facility called the Big Shell. His codename became Raiden. Rose, though ordinarily not a field operative, was called in as part of his mission support via Codec, as replacement for another data analyst. The original was -- by another supposed coincidence -- in an accident prior to the mission. As the mission was actually orchestrated by the Patriots, she was most likely planted to provide him with emotional support, and to make sure he followed orders. During the mission, Rose decided the life-or-death situation was a good time to be honest with Raiden about her feelings regarding their relationship, which more often than not ended in bickering.
Towards the end of the mission, Raiden's past as a child soldier was revealed. Rose was horrified, having no idea about his past. It was then she finally admitted her role as a spy, and that the Rose he'd loved all these years was a fake -- but she insisted her love for him hadn't been fake. Just before the connection was cut, she also told him she was pregnant with his child.
An AI 'Rose' replaced her for the last leg of the mission. It appeared the real Rose was being held captive by the Patriots, so even when Raiden discovered their intentions he was forced to carry out their orders. If Raiden died, she would also die. This forced him to kill his adoptive father, Solidus Snake, as a final order for the mission to be a success.
Rose was released, and the two reunited outside Federal Hall, the place they'd first met two years ago to the exact day. Raiden forgave her, and she asked him to see her for who she really was. It was then he proposed to her, and they were set for a happy ending.
It was short-lived. During their engagement, Raiden's resurfaced memories of his past meant he pushed Rose away more than ever. He fell into depression and heavy drinking, getting into bar brawls and coming home in the early hours of the morning covered in cuts and bruises. Eventually, he stopped coming home altogether.
Rose's concern for him and her unborn child made her formulate a plan with his then commanding officer, Colonel Roy Campbell. They married, and she claimed she miscarried Raiden's child, and the one she gave birth to was Campbell's. This was designed to protect them from the Patriots: they would have nothing to gain by harming either her or her child, as Rosemary 'Campbell' had seemingly severed all ties and moved on. And they wouldn't be able to use her or her child against Raiden, if he was unaware the child was his.
Although she had cut off all ties from her ex-fiancé, her feelings for him were unchanged. She gave birth to a boy, who she named John, after his father. Her son was the only one who knew the truth, and grew up believing he was a hero. Likely because of her failures to help Raiden before he left, Rose took up studying psychology and went on to become a military counsellor in the Combat Stress Platoon.
In 2014, she became a part of Old Snake's support team during Liquid Ocelot's insurrection. She gave him the same cover story about her marriage, and while she was aware Raiden was also assisting Snake, she asked him not to tell Raiden about her involvement. She offered Snake advice on how to keep his stress levels down on the battlefield to maintain his combat efficiency, and could give an analysis of the mental and emotional states of the enemy, as well as how to use that against them.
Midway through Snake's infiltration of Shadow Moses, she arrived at Somarium.
[Personality] Rose is difficult to separate the act from the real Rose. She's spent so long lying that she's a natural at it, and it is difficult to say what parts of her are genuinely hers, or part of the façade she maintained for years. However, she is not without a conscience; in fact, the exact opposite. She feels guilt for repeatedly betraying the person she loves most, and this lead her to confess it. She now tries to use her skills for more noble intentions: everything in her act is to protect her family, and her skills at understanding people have been turned towards counselling rather than manipulation. One of her tendencies that has stuck is her concern about her appearance. She isn't outright vain, but she is assured she's beautiful, and she likes to look good even in casual situations.
Rose cares about people. She's very good at reading others, bolstered by her studies in psychology. Extremely compassionate and empathetic, she actively seeks to understand the motivations and pasts behind soldiers. This differs greatly from her attitude five years ago, when she gave no thought to whoever Raiden killed in the Big Shell, as long as he came home safely. She is now far less selfish and sees every soldier as a person rather than an obstacle. This can even make her sympathetic towards those she shouldn't be, like Snake's enemies, the BB Corps.
She hates to see suffering, and does everything in her power to help where she can. She is fine-tuned to how others feel, but she believes her thoughts and feelings are equally important. Her emotions are openly shown, and she always shares her thoughts if she thinks they're worth saying. This can make her seem somewhat opinionated -- especially if she disagrees with someone, or is irritated by them, then she can be stubborn to the point of nagging. Still, her heart is generally in the right place.
Her past isn't something she likes to talk about. She claims to have moved on with her life, and in some ways, she has. Her surprising strength and the importance she places in her independence saw to that. Deeply buried, though, she loves and misses Raiden, even without seeing him for five years. But most important to her is her son, and she'd go to any lengths for him.
[Specialties/Abilities] Extremely accomplished at lying and pretending to be what she isn't -- she's been at it for seven years now. Also very knowledgeable in psychology, particularly in a battlefield context. Super nagging skills. Not-so-skilled at cooking.
[Affection] Rose will only ever love her Jack. She doesn't mind hugs or anything similar, though, as long as she likes you.
[Fighting] If you want to hurt her for plot purposes, ask first. She can't fight at all herself.
[Other Facts] Your psyche gauge appears to be in excellent condition. Good for you!
