Chapter 9: The Date

1. Harry was not looking forward to the first Hogsmeade weekend, two weeks after Hermione’s birthday. That meant, of course, that the day seemed to zoom at him with alarming speed.

Has anyone else noticed how often JKR wrote something similar in the series? (I'm not claiming to have foreseen this--she did it a lot in the first four books I had available at the time I wrote this.)

2. He had longed for nothing more that year than to be able to go to Hogsmeade, even if he had to wear his Invisibility Cloak and use secret passages out of the castle to do it. Now, Hogsmeade was the last place he wanted to go, especially on a double date with Viktor Krum, Cho Chang and Hermione.

This was another technique of JKR's that she used frequently: Harry mentally juxtaposing something he used to want badly and once he "gets" it, it becomes the last thing he wants. (I think that being in Dudley's second bedroom was the first time we read this--he wishes he were back under the stairs with his letter rather than in a real bedroom without it.)

3. Harry thought that it was possible now that there was something in the world more boring than one of Professor Binns’ classes: a date with Cho Chang. This experience should be bottled and sold as a sleep aid, he thought.

Well, it wasn't much different in canon, was it?

4. As they were shaking hands, Ginny emerged from the stairs to the Potions dungeon. She stopped dead when she saw Harry and Cho, frowning at first, then looking happier as she saw that no kissing was following the hand-shaking. Actually, she looked like she was going to laugh, thought Harry, who sincerely hoped she wouldn’t.

And--in OotP Harry and Cho also didn't kiss while on their date, or afterward. And in both cases Hermione did the equivalent of calling him an idiot.
