Chapter 30: Trials

Another title for this post could be "Fandom-y things are fandom-y". Happy seventh birthday to Deathly Hallows! Oh, the marathon reading, the efforts to stay hydrated, the temptation to SLEEP before finishing (yes, I succumbed) and the tongue-biting to prevent spoiling family members who haven't read as far, or asking my daughter to clam up about ( Read more... )

Commentary on your commentary. Again. :P author_by_night July 21 2014, 23:04:55 UTC
Wow, seven years ago, my fangirlish, fandom-induced bubble about Remus Lupin was burst. :P Still love the guy, but kind of have to admit his flaws were always there. Seriously though, I remember it too. I read the book in a day - I took a few breaks, but very careful ones, avoided LJ like the plague. I remember keeping notes and just giving up when Ron left. I also remember thinking it was so "obvious" the Resurrection Stone was the Philosopher's stone. Yeah, nope. :P

Now, commentary to your commentary, out of order.

JKR never did anything with the Lupin-silver-hand thing, but that's fine with me. (I was far from the only person to expect this--tons of other people did too!)

I was one of the few people who figured it wouldn't go anywhere. Not sure why exactly, I just didn't see it. I wonder if it ever occurred to Jo? I swear she mentioned it at one point but I forget when or what context.

Ron bit his lip; when he spoke, his voice shook. "I-I wanted Mr. Malfoy to think so..." Your Ron wasn't evil, was he?

I had no idea how ( ... )

Despite some people's insistence on Ron's being evil (largely due to a conversation he has with Harry in the second chapter of Time of Good Intentions), he wasn't, honestly!

I don't think the phone booth entry was a Doctor Who thing, since when you enter the Tardis it's like you're in a much larger space (although she's done this with other things, like Mr. Weasley's car). The telephone booth in Get Smart and the booth in OotP both operate like elevators, taking you down to your destination: a secret government agency that most of the rest of society know nothing about. So I immediately saw the similarities...

I didn't really think so, you never struck me as a "Ron is evil" person. :)

Fair enough about the phone booth. I haven't seen Get Smart, so I wouldn't know. I was thinking less along the lines of structural technicality and more "seemingly innocuous call box takes you to magical place." Though you're right that the TARDIS is bigger on the inside! There's really nothing too DW-ish about her books, although the show itself is similar in that it can be equally enjoyed by both a young audience and an adult audience.

Guess I'm really showing my age with the Get Smart thing! (I'm only a year older than JKR!) I didn't feel compelled to see the movie with Steve Carrell because it really just didn't seem like they "got" the feel of the original (and the reviews also said that it sucked). It's also probably not one of those shows that has aged well, so I can't really recommend it to someone who doesn't want to feel stabbity about misogyny and Cold War platitudes. You just had to be there, I suppose. ;)
