Snape's parents, for instance, can't be the only couple in wizarding history who fought over the fact that one of them was magical and the other not, and the result of all of those fights in all of those marriages can't have been the couples staying together. Not that JKR could show everything (she wrote a backstory for Dean Thomas she never managed to fit into the books), but when the series comes from someone who started writing them after a divorce, it seems like a rather large omission.
