On the other hand...

Cars do have a massive environmental impact and I'm happy to pay more tax for using one.

And I'd much prefer an automated system which watched for speeding all the time and fined us whenever we broke the limit to the rather arbitrary speed camera system which everybody ignores and just slows down for.

Agreed.

Plus I've seen this petition email floating around a few times, and I think whoever wrote it has really biased the facts so more people will sign. I've looked around on the news items connected to this issue and I can't find any mention anywhere of having to pay £200 for the box.

I'm not trying to sway people either way, I just want them to make informed decisions instead of reactionary "OMG teh tax = teh suxxor!!!!11!" ones.

I will have to look into the facts on this one. If the above figures are correct then i`ll deffinately be signing it.

But to be honest yeah the money aspect of it is really harsh, but the environmental issue isn`t as clearcut as you think. As a geomicrobiologist involed in bioremediation (clearing up polluted land) I like to think I`m pretty environmentally friendly however have to say I`m not keen on the cost of running cars going up much more on top of the exorbitant price we already pay for our petrol. Why? you ask - because quite frankly at the moment there is no viable alternative in place to cars for mid to long range journeys.
Then there is the other issue - tracking. I could do a huge rant on this issue but will save you lot the trouble of reading it. Suffice to say I already hate the fact i cant walk anywhere in the city centre without being picked up on cctv cameras. I will never subscribe to big brother state.
