Time has been flying. Don't really feel like trying to recap much, overall I'm very satisfied with how my life is going. occams_scissors is the best friend (and wife) I could have ever had and I'm glad she's by my side throughout this surrealistic journey we call life ( Read more... )

I totally understand where you're coming from. And I make sure not to stress myself to the hilt "because it's Christmas". But for me, all winter holidays (Christmas and Hanukkah being the ones I celebrate) are about traditions with my family. I *love* the smell of Christmas trees and the lights dancing and the glass ornaments, so I put up a Christmas tree. I *love* lighting my menorah and saying the Hebrew prayer over the candles and remembering the miracle of Hanukkah. To me, filling stockings are a way to get all those little things that you never think of, but are really useful, like your favorite pens, or little notebooks, etc... and a few treats. Stockings are a way to remember St. Nicholas who was a kind, caring, and giving person. A way of not letting his memory die ( ... )

You sound alot like moodvertigo and patchworking in that you truly do enjoy doing many of the very "holiday" things without trying to stress yourself out about all the hype. I got no problem with people like that... it's the people who go all psycho at this time of year that annoy me to no end (I have a few relatives who drove me nuts in the past with trying to have the "Martha Stewart" xmas and became so obsessed with the idea that they couldn't have any fun).

thanks for that :) I agree with you that I have *never* understood why people get so stressed out over the 'holiday season'. It's supposed to be a time for getting together, for relaxing, for remembering, for fun - and I will NEVER be one of those people who stress out at the Mall or run over others with my shopping cart at 6:01am at Toys R Us the day after Thanskgiving.

I'd much rather have a potluck with friends, watch some good movies and relax on a comfy couch...speaking of which, ROTK comes out this week - you guys want to get together for a viewing? *grin*

I was really tempted to hit the mall the day after turkey-day and snag one of the first spots and just sit there all day to torment the shoppers. Throw it into reverse occassionally so the reverse lights come on but not move. Fiddle around the trunk and get in the car and sit... ahhh the good ol' days of being overtly sadistic. I decided to sleep in though and relax at home instead (it's that whole getting older thing I guess).

I'll be picking it up tomorrow on my lunch break, we do have the last week of the year off so that is always a possibility.

Yeah - it's the traditions I like. The lights, the colors, the tree, the religious cermonies, the stories (birth of Christ, yule log, St. Nicholas, Santa, Rudolph, Christmas Vacation (HA!), the music (but only in December, any earlier is death on wheels for me. Christmas is a religious holiday for me, but also a neat blending of other stuff, including traditions from beliefs like yours. The season, if not totally destroyed by consumerism, can be really "old world" and be a nice thing to experience. I really dig Greenfield Village's holiday set up. Ever been out there ( ... )

Yeah, the consumerism and overall fake way people act this time of year just really wreck it for me. I don't think I could handle Greenfield Villages holiday set up... I think I'd have to go postal, but thats just me >grins< (even though the museum and village any other time of year are AWESOME). The relatives on both mine and OS's sides of the family all decorate and such so we look at it as getting our fix of it when we visit and not having to set it all up or take it down and store it when the holiday is over... hehe.

My business partner, Aric pretty much feels the way you do I think. He really hates most of it. His Mom used to stress everyone out every Christmas because she had to have the decorations just perfect. The house had to be better decoreated than the neighbor's house. The food had to be the best EVER. And so on and so forth. I can see why he no longer is interested in "celebrating". My Mom was like that too, to some extent. But fortunately I decided that I would take to heart the things I liked from what we did and what others did and just celebrate Christmas in that way. I'll tell you this much, my kids will love it, because I will never make them feel all stressed about gifts, and decorations and all that stuff.
