Re. Phil : I've always said singer/songwriters are marmite music. They either appeal to you or don't, and I have no real definition of what makes those I like those I like, and the others intolerable. I can understand how Joy could have come across as you describe but I loved its honesty and sincerity. In fact I prefer it to the new one still. Hey ho.

I think you'll enjoy the Rhian Sheehan especially being a Jam Jar fan. There are many clips on youtube etc. but the album isnt available over here sadly.

I don't really know what happened with me and Mr Campbell. I absolutely adored "Fresh New Life", and loved the White Buffalo material... and then he went and made "Joy". I did think the latest was a step in the right direction, but he seems to have sacrificed "tunes" for earnest introspection, whereas the earlier stuff seemed to manage both so effortlessly. Perhaps it's just stuff he needed to get out of his system, in which case, god speed 'n all that. Hopefully this is just an instance where he's not playing to his strengths as I perceive them - as the latest Marillion record demonstrates, he's not the only one guilty of that lately... ;-)

"Marmite" music... LOL! I think virtually everything I like falls into that category. Perhaps that's the point, really! :-)

Absolutely. When QOTSA are good they're untouchable. When they're not it's a bit "oh dear what were you thinking" Songs for the Deaf is awesome.

Agreed, again. Virtually every album QotSA made has two or three fabulous songs on, but none of them are consistently great. "Songs For The Deaf" is easily their best to these ears. I *very* much prefer Kyuss, meself.
