Learning German

As you know I have an affection for Germany. Mostly the South if we're being honest, but then that's probably as much because I've never been to the north as anything else. It's not just the beer (although that's a big part of it) - I love the food, the people the culture, and I just think it's a really great place to be.

On my pretty much annual ( Read more... )

Can't really help with advice learning a second language later in life, as it's 15 years since I did my French and German A-levels. Even after all that time, given a few days of practice I can usually manage to make myself understood in either language (usually followed by the listener making use of the opportunity to speak English), although I settle into French a little quicker.

I'm going to start teaching myself Russian this year, because I don't have enough other stuff going on ;-) I'm just going to do it through books and CDs, I think - I've got enough formal study on my plate with my late-in-life degree.

I personally do not do well in Learn on Your Own environments in language learning. I learned so, so much more in a semester of Turkish than I ever could have on my own. If I really wanted to learn something more than you already have, I'd just pony up the 150.00GBP and go for it.

But I really suck at language acquisition.

Me too. Although I have a O grade in French and can order beer in every nation on Earth, I am most definitely not blessed with liguisitic skill.

Maybe not, but you have a firm grasp of life's essentials, I should say!

I'd do 2 or 3 - 3 if you're dead motivated and can find the right kind of book/CD combo but I bet the 20-week course is the one that would really launch you. There is something ineffable about being taught, LOL.

£7.50 a night? You can hardly get a fish supper for that these days...
I think you know that you want to :)

Yeah, it's just £150 to shell out right now, when I'm about to be hit for about £250 for the art classes....

I don't think there's any other way though if I want to make use of it in May.

Yeah I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet. I do know two native German speakers and at least two more people who speak it well enough to correct me, which is handy.

I do not have a gift for languages though so it'll be hard.
