Ouch. I still mourn my first iPod - actually, that's a lie - the first one is still working for someone else. I mourn my third iPod. The second one got nicked, so I mourn that too, but not as much.

Still on my first iPod...I was late to the game. But I know, when the time comes (and it will) to bid adieu to it, I will put it away sadly...

What's a hard reboot then? I've tried the holding down the centre button and the menu button - it just comes back and does the same thing again.

My sister gave me a 1st gen iPod that was just gurgling and resetting and coming up with error messages about the hard drive - i took the back off, reseated the hard drive, and it's been working fine for about 3 years now.
