most has been said but Cyclescheme is a good idea. I also agree with Antje re the insurance. As an administrator of a cyclescheme I know of one situation where the chap had his bike pinched from his close, and the insurance company wouldn't pay-up. He was left paying 10 more instalments on a bike he no longer had :o( My bike was commuter road/mountain hybrid & I like it. best day to day advice is to make sure your tyres are always fully pumped up - it really makes a difference!
Giant Escape is a decent bike. Comes in 2 flavours, the M1 and the R1. M1 has MTB wheels but comes with semi-slick tyres. Swap the tyres to knobblies and you're set for an off road bounce about. The R1 has larger road wheels and tyres. No off-road for this puppy, but is has the advantage of larger diameter wheels = faster bike for your effort. Remember the scheme allows you get accessories as long as you include it at the time. Pick your bike and associated bits, and work out how much you need from the scheme.
