Writer's Block: Life With ADHD

Please excuse any weirdly-worded sentences or typos - I'm exhausted.

This topic has actually been on my mind a lot lately. I was diagnosed in first grade, and started medication in second grade. It's affected me quite a bit, but that's not surprising... any kind of mental/neurological disorder affects their behavior and the way they function. People ( Read more... )

Unlike you I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my mid 20's. I was often confused as a young student because I always did extremely well with aptitude tests, but was basically a D and F student in school.
I couldn't agree with you more regarding medication for ADD. Thankfully, I didn't get the hyperactivity - so I'm ADD not ADHD. My therapist prescribed Ritalin for me, which when it works allows me to focus...unfortunately, taking Ritalin on a regular basis just burns me out, so I avoid it. I've learned to embrace my "different-ness" and have come to understand that regardless of how people look at my so called disorder, it provides me a very unique insight to the people and world around me. My advice, don't decide not to do something because of your bad experiences.. Embrace your special gift and run with it... perhaps all people with ADD really need is someone who has the condition making decisions on how it should be treated.... ;-)
