I posted this on my Facebook page back in October, but I wanted to share it here as well and get your thoughts and opinions.

Love to all,

~PJ

Pretty much everyone on my friends list has noticed I complain about a certain co-worker a lot. Well this morning he did something that actually made me hate him, and I try not to hate anybody.

First a little background info: He found God in prison and is now very active in a local Baptist church. He says he reads the bible and prays every day. He quit drinking and is working on quiting smoking. He believes he's a good Christian.

HOWEVER.... I have never met a more bigotted and selfish person in my life. He is constantly making fun of people, making racist remarks, and constantly nagging me about what the bible says about homosexuals. When my friends come in the store I have a lot of fun joking around and teasing them. When they leave, he asks me, "Are those girls some of your people?" (meaning are they gay)

Early this morning a guy walks into the store wearing only a t-shirt and jeans (it's 45 degrees outside) and tells us he has just walked 10 miles to get to us because his car broke down and he can't get ahold of anyone to take him home. He doesn't live that far away from the store so I offered to take him. However, my coworker had other plans. I asked him to watch the register so I could leave and take the guy home. He looked at me like I was crazy and made some stupid excuses (stupid to me anyway). I would have been gone for 10 minutes maximum, but he refused to let me leave. I wanted to shout at him, "What would Jesus do?"

I felt so bad for the guy so I gave him my jacket and some gloves. After he left my coworker comes up to me and says, "Geez, what's wrong with these people, coming in here thinking we are a taxi service? We've got jobs to do!" I wanted to shout at him again, "Do you think Jesus is happy with you right now?"

Thanks to my wonderful parents, I was taught to NEVER EVER turn my back on someone in need. Yes I was at work but it was 4:30 a.m. and there was hardly anyone around. I think my coworker could have handled things if he had really wanted to. I honestly have never seen anyone refuse to help someone because they were "too busy". You should never be too busy to help someone, even if it's a complete stranger.

I read a quote once that said, "Going to church on sunday doesn't make you a Christian any more than sitting in a garage makes you a car." I just can't stand people who think they are better than others just because they believe, act and live differently. In the bible Jesus says, "A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another." He DOESN'T say, "Love only those who believe the same things you do." He says love EVERYONE. I've told my coworker that dozens of times, but he just doesn't seem to get it. He's only interested in quoting scriptures that make him feel like he's better than everyone else around him.

Now, I'm not saying I have never acted like that. Believe me I have, and I know I have. But fortunately for me I've had a lot of learning experiences that have taught me tolerance, compassion, and love. I firmly believe that if the religion you profess to follow doesn't make you a better person you are better off not even being a part of it. If you call yourself a Christian, you better be doing what followers of Christ are supposed to do.

Lecture over. You may be seated.
