We have this same setup in our house. We have found that if it is a fixture with a pull-cord for the light and fan as well, you can turn off the light via the cord and leave the fan on.
Hmm, pulling the cord just seems to alternate fan speeds (off, slow, fast, off). Pulling it an an angle doesn't seem to do anything, so I'll ask the landlord. Thank you!
