Great observations. I know a guy who unknowingly walked out of two successive no-hitters around the 7th inning. Such a thing would never happen in "a sport of Now" - or at least not when the Now of the sport is paced so much differently than the Now of society. The Now of baseball is more like the Now of fishing - it's about waiting quietly for it to catch up to you. Football brings the viewer up to its intense pace, which seems much more contemporary. Even when nothing is happening, a lot is happening.

The other reason that football is now and baseball was then is that people in baseball are like oh noz our million dollars athlete is using performance enhancing drugs tsk tsk and boo hoo!

In football they are like, look these guys are about 12 feet tall and weigh 2,000 lbs, they wear more protective gear than a mercedes benz, and even still, every time they tackle someone both their knees explode from the impact force. These guys are already engineered engines of destruction and none of them will be able to walk unassisted when they are 50 if they even live that long. So who cares what they do to their bodies? Bring on the carnage!
