confusion

i'm really tired of shitty jobs. i have to have to have to get off my ass and apply to Proper Ones. I think what I worry about is that these jobs will be just as bad as the one I have now, but worse in that I'll know it won't get any better than this. It's not that I'm depressed or feeling hopeless - I guess it's just that I'm lost and not ( Read more... )

Part of me seriously doubts there ARE good jobs - I'm doing admin work, and though my options are pretty limited b/c of my working holiday visa, I was doing admin work when I was in Canada too. I think the best I could have hoped for was getting an admin job in a government department and then working my way up to a 'real' job. To be fair though, I don't have a whole lot of practical experience, and I'm pretty sure you have more than I do, so you'll probably have much better luck.

Privileged is not the same thing as having no problems - and it certainly doesn't do starving children in Africa any good for you to decide that your problems aren't 'worthy' and consequently not do anything about them, or start feeling even worse due to guilt.

What's wrong with doing degree after degree? If you get a PhD, then you can stay in university forever!!!

How are you liking your admin work now? I think there are good jobs out there, but I guess that's because I'm a closeted optimist:) I see postings of the good jobs and meet people who have good jobs.. So they must be there. I think we're in a similar situation because I don't have a whole lot of experience, either.

I know what you're saying about how privilege doesn't erradicate personal problems. Still, I think it's nice sometimes to step back and look at this way: I'm very lucky to even have this as a choice. Most people don't get to choose between something "flaky" vs. settling. As anxiety-inducing as this decision may be, I'm lucky to be able to make it, you know?

Are you going to go for a PhD? I don't think I want it :/ I've realised that, even with a PhD, you're not exactly guaranteed a job with a university after. I'm leaning towards doing another MA. Eeesh.

And I know what you're saying about being lucky to even have this as a choice. I've been thinking a lot about class privilege lately, and I recognize that even when I was in university, working 20 hours a week at a call centre and eating mayonnaise sandwiches when my money ran out before payday, there was still the safety net of my parents, and my expectations, to see me through. Or to quote my Mom's cousin Gail - "I've been broke, but I've never been poor ( ... )

"I've been broke, but I've never been poor" - I've never heard that before, but it's a great quotation. She's got some smarts, that cousin Gail ( ... )

pan-oceanic gesture of solidarity, of a sort - I can offer no more reasoned comment, but, y'know, I'm in a similar mire. I'm blessed in that my current tin-pot temporary admin employment is for Social Services - arguably a not un-bad cause, but, still, it's easy to loiter. In short, I Can Relate.

that was a garbled comment. oh well.
