Water of Life Update

The characters headed out to the hospital to look in on the dead guy who got killed a few days back by the rats. There, Marty took Jesus with him, and Nathan and Julia went out to the street to perform for folks and maybe make a few bucks (Nathan on the guitar, Julia singing). Hank just stood behind them invisibly.

Inside, Marty and Jesus went down into the morgue and signed in. The lab worker, a woman named Dunja (Polish), showed them the body, but as they lifted it onto a table for study, it opened and organs spilled to the floor. Dunja noted that the stitches she'd put in it had been cut since she'd put them in. The Prometheans noted this and moved on.

The man had been killed by rats burrowing into his flesh and chewing open his femoral artery. His organs were intact, but showed evidence of longtime alcoholism. Jesus used Corpse Tongue and learned that the man had angered the rats, that he didn't know of other animal attacks, and he hadn't been near the sculpture personally. Marty used Ephemeral Flesh and found one spirit nearby, a strange being made of glass or thick plastic, standing near Dunja. It told Marty that, yes, someone had been here recently and had mucked with the body. It touched Marty and his whole body went numb - a spirit of inuring. Then it went back to Dunja.

Marty asked the security guard for help, and the log showed someone named "L. Roddy" here during the afternoon. The guard couldn't remember what kind of ID he'd had (you can't get into the morgue with just a smile). Checking the video tape, Marty saw a dude in a gray hoodie walking into the morgue, and then the camera went dead.

Outside, Nathan and Julia were doing OK with the musician bit. Hank noticed a guy across the street taking pictures, so he walked toward him. The guy walked away, but Hank tracked him down and confronted him. The guy said, basically, that it wasn't a crime to take pictures, and then turned his back on Hank, who left.

The Prometheans regrouped and went out to dinner. There, Marty experimented with his new toys (Detect Impurity and Drain Emotions) on their waitress. Nathan asked about it, and Marty wound up identifying the throng's individual Vices. There ensured a lively discussion about whether it was possible to drain positive emotion, whether it would wise, and whether draining it would taint it.

Back at the RV, Marty settled down to watch TV, Julia jumped in the shower and turned on the webcam. Jesus called Marty to fix up the computer so he could get online, and Marty noticed the cables were loose. He followed the cabals and found a little device attached to them. Concerned, he went outside with Hank, and they called the mages in Boston (Rogue Element) and got Niamh. She wasn't happy to talk to them - since Julia's accident, they've been getting nasty phone calls about her missing her court date. But she did talk to them, and then clicked over to call waiting. Clicking back, she fielded their questions about the computer ("might be a bug") and fake IDs ("How the hell should I know?"). Feeling sorry for them (or maybe just wanting to fob them off), she told them they might be getting a call soon from someone else.

And sure enough, a man named Valence called them, and explained he needed to see them. He showed up, a Chinese-American man on a motorcycle, athletic and strong-looking. He told them their RV was "bugged all to fuck", and magically scrambled the signals (cutting off Julia's broadcast mid-shower, which probably resulted in some blue balls somewhere). He explained that he was a local mage, and his cabal, the Phoenix Lure, had seen Marty on YouTube and noticed it wasn't faked. He'd also noticed some dudes bugging the van earlier, but didn't stop them because he wasn't sure what was happening. But since the Prometheans were friends of Niamh (also Mysterium, just like Valence), he figured they needed help.

He chatted with them about magic and heroism; Valence has a real thing for the concept of a hero (he's a Tamer of Fire). He told the Prometheans that they might not be heroes, but they sure sounded like them, and if you could be a hero you might as well do it, right? They talked about the statue and it turned out that Martin Edgardo Anis, the sculptor, was a Sleepwalker associate of the cabal. Valence agreed to have the throng meet Anis the next night, and sparred with Jesus a bit for taking off.

Next week, we're not doing Promethean because Marty's player is off at a concert. Changeling one-shot instead.
