It seems to be somewhat disconcerting that events most unique and bizarre always seem to have a habit of finding their way into my lap

wow, what an eye opener. Thank god you're OK and they didn't do anything to you. I live in the suburbs of Sydney and used to go to the city often but never saw anything like that. My hubby works in the city and sometimes he has too work really late and would walk around the CBD looking for a taxi. I've told him to be careful but he thinks I'm over reacting as he believes Sydney is very safe. Hhhmmmm......I'm going to get him to read your post.
I too grew up in the suburbs (Hills area), and generally it's really safe. But there are some dodgy pockets like the Blacktown area for example, sections of Parramatta, and any area of high ethnic isolation. The strip south of Parramatta Rd, Cabramatta, etc. You probably know all the areas as a Sydneysider.
The CBD in general is very safe if you know what to look out for, especially if you're up away from George St and the south CBD in general where all the anti-social behaviour tends to be.
I think instances like what happened to me are few and far between. I was just very unlucky. I don't think I've ever felt unsafe in Sydney as long I was in a place and time of my choosing.
Also many people get in trouble because of their mouth. Keep your pride and ego in check, and you can avoid most instance of trouble. I would agree with your husband that there's actually not that much to worry about :) Just be alert, but not alarmed.
