Smokiing Cessation

Jan 26, 2011 00:19

I am to make a smoking cessation packet/sample bag sort of thing at my place of employment for people who just found out that they may have cancer from smoking. I am hoping, of course, for it to be as effective as possible.

What kind of advice can you guys give me for this project?

Someone who is addicted to nicotine and is also dealing with a potential cancer diagnosis might have a particularly hard time going without nicotine at that stressful point. My mother, in that situation, relied heavily on Nicorette gum.

My advice is to get the smoking cessation packets to smokers who don't [yet] have cancer too.

What kinds of things are you going to put in the kit? In addition to local/national resources and numbers for quitting hotlines, I seem to remember that we'd add a lot of things people could chew/suck on (like Jolly Ranchers/tic tacs, etc) to help with the hand-to-mouth gratification.

My company provides health coaching programs & we include mints and putty in the kits. Instead of putty you could provide a stress ball - it's for something to do with your hands.

You can also find coupons for NRT online, such as at http://www.internetdrugcoupons.com/ or the Nicorette or Nicotrol websites.

As far as providing phone numbers, Dialing 1-800-Quit-Now will generally put you in touch with the quitting hotline for your state. You might also see if Nicotine Anonymous has meetings in your area and you provide contact info on that. You could also call local hospitals to see if they have any smoking cessation classes or support groups.
I agree w/ venus_in_fur that providing them to all smokers would be helpful.
