I never felt like our computer ran optimally. We bought it in August of 2004, and, well, I'm of the opinion that if the system starts crashing without explanation during the first 6 months to 1 year, it is not a solid system. But barring the occasional fist-thumping, it served our needs, so we couldn't exchange it or anything ( Read more... )

I take full responsibility, and therefore you and art can use my PC whenever you need to.

It's hilarious, isn't it? And here I was, just thinking it was high time to finally rip those albums so I could hear them in our daily shuffle list....

I still so owe you a reply, don't I.

I love your journal entries, even and especially the irksome ones :)

We gotta figure out what we're doing with this computer. I might be telecommuting if this transit strike goes down!

Wanna just buy a new hard drive, or wait until Gerard sheds some light on our latest blue screen?

What's the boot error? Is there an OS installed on the old(new) drive? Did you boot up with your install CD in the drive and tray to install to it?

I forgot overnight, stupid brain. I'll check when I get home, and let you know. The drive should have an OS on it, as it was my main drive on my old computer. It's probably running Windows 95.

I'll try to see if I have an install CD left for that drive, not sure I do - I guess we could always wipe the OS and reinstall with our XP disks and see what happens...

Yeah you might want to try a fresh install on the old(new)boot drive. The old installation was tailored to the specific hardware in whatever machine you pulled that drive out of.

Does it make any difference that we've been using data on that drive as a slave, and it worked fine? Or does the compatibility issue only come up when you're trying to use the drive as a master...

Stupid computer trick for pulling data off of dead hard drives: put it in the freezer for a while.

Serously. Put it in an anti-static bag and stick it in the freezer for a few hours. Then hook it up to your system as the "slave" drive to another hard drive, boot and copy data off the old one.

It can take several trips to and from the freezer to get everything off, and it won't always work, but people around here at Big Unnamed Computer Chip Company report about a 75% success rate.
