[fanfic]

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention: What is up with fanfiction? I semi-understand the reason for writing it, and sooo many people do. I guess I feel like a huge nerd because I don't like that kind of stuff. I'd rather make my own characters.... and plot lines... but then again, I don't like things altered from the way they originally were. Perhaps that ( Read more... )

I did a thing in my LJ recently about fanfic, because I didn't use to get it either. I've been writing for almost 30 years, give or take a few, and I never understood the idea of writing in someone else's world. I didn't want to be bound to their characters, or worry about getting something wrong ( ... )

See, I read that LJ entry of yours... that's the only reason I semi-understand, lol. I understand the need to continue a story/tell the stories in between the lines. But you're the only one I've ever heard explain it that way.

I've heard a few others say it, and I think in some ways it shows in what people write. Or in what they believe... like folks who think the story should've gone a slightly different way.

One of the best fics I ever read was one short one that explained what happened between Remus and Tonks between books 4 and 5 of HP. And I thought the author was right -- it was a missing link, and suddenly the books made more sense to me with that bit filled in.

You must have access to fanfic by people who can actually write. You, my dear, have superb writing skills.

Is there a reason why there are so many fanfics portraying man on man? That confuses me to no end.

My problem with fanfic is that most of it is bad. Badly written, badly plotted, badly thought out, bad sex scenes, bad ideas, just bad. Bad, bad, bad.

The stuff that is good is also bad, because such talented writers are wasting their time when they could be creating something of their own.

Most of what I've stumbled upon is BAD. It leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth.

I just wanted to comment here... I know a few published authors (awesome folks who do write awesome books that they are paid for) who write fanfic. Some of them do it still because they love those fandoms and have fun playing a bit. Some of them do it to blow off steam a little and escape from their "day job" of writing. Some of them don't do it anymore, but started there to basically work through their million words o'crap to learn HOW to write good fiction, and left behind a legacy of actual good fic (it's hard to find those gems amongst the bad stuff out there, sadly, unless you know the author's handle ( ... )
