Maybe you can just tell your mom when and where you're going to be without explanation or negotiation, something like "I'm going to be in town on Friday, and I'll be staying with Jane until Tuesday. Can I come to your house on Monday to visit?" I find that it's sometimes helpful to sort of "fill the space" before any questions even get asked.

yeah -- that's pretty much what l. suggested. and that's pretty much what i'm planning on doing. i just don't want to have to deal with the guilt trip i'm going to get. sometimes i think parents are as difficult to deal with as teenagers. :)
