Following River's astute medical observation and the subsequent apprising of Lilly and Havelock, Puck is now trundling along in the company of and with support from his spouse and boyfriend. (River has been elected to proceed ahead of them and warn the infirmary staff that they're in for what might be the single weirdest pregnancy of their careers ( Read more... )

"There's usually a phone for emergencies."

There is not in this elevator, of course. Damn steampunk. Maybe.

Jack hits the door a little harder. "Hey!" he shouts. "We're stuck and there's a pregnant man on board!"

Just trust him. He never lies.

The heavy thump those in the elevator may hear (and feel) does not come from the doors.

It comes from the ceiling.

"This, I think, is not so much a thing I remember. Still."

It is a comfortable resting place. For a bird and a man.

"Possibly he is not so much a man, yes?"

If his voice is a little louder near the end, it's just coincidence.

Really.

Ignore the grin.

Havelock looks up expressionlessly.

"Ah, Raven," he says flatly.

Just what they need!

Puck sparkles fitfully, beginning to sink down against the elevator wall.

Raven gets a glower.

"Either be of aid or flap off, if 'tis all one."

Lilly pats Puck in a reassuring way. She hopes.

"Hey, Raven. There isn't any big obvious thing blocking the elevator from moving, is there?"

Pounding and shouting is not helping, and Jack has the sinking feeling he's the most experienced person here when it comes to childbirth.

"Um," he says and disposes of the apple core. "I've assisted with births quite a few times, should things get . . . complicated in here."

The keyword being "assisted."

Havelock has little to contribute there, he feels. He simply pulls out a small bottle and wads up his handkerchief, before beginning to work out the cork.

"I have knives," he says.

What? It's a start.

"There is only me."

Somehow this should be reassuring.

But it is not.

"And I am not so heavy."

He swings his feet, almost idly.

Bang. Bang bang.

"Also I am good with messy things."

Especially when he can eat them.

Uh.

Puck groans.

Though this might be out of pain.

"Is there no way we might first attempt to exit hearrgh."

Nope. Never mind.

Lilly is looking from Havelock to Jack to Puck with steadily growing horror.

"Okay, seriously? I am not qualified to assist in childbirth either, and Havelock's specialty is not so much this part of the circle of life. We can't do this, we don't even have any... stuff!"

Jack shakes his head. "Knives," he says. "And bandages." He takes off his jacket. "And something for him to bite on."

"Until this elevator gets unstuck, we make do."

Havelock nods absently, and presses the dampened cloth under Puck's nose.

"Breathe in," he says quietly. "It should dull the pain, at least."

Everyone else can probably, in this enclosed space, smell the chloroform.

Puck does not trust mysterious strange-smelling cloths showing up under his nose and claiming to dull pain.

However, he does trust Havelock.

Obediently, he inhales .

... Huh. That kinda tickles.

"What now, then?" he drawls, though his agitated magenta may belie his casual tone.

He suspects they mean to slice him up.

"Mostly there will be screaming, I think."

Raven sounds remarkably cheerful about that fact.

"You will not so much feel it."

Possibly that 'it' does not refer to screaming.

Or maybe it does.

Sore throats hurt, too!

"God." Lilly shudders. "There are going to be fluids, aren't there?"

She sighs heavily.

"Fine, whatever, the universe hates me. How are we going to do this?"

"I am terribly sorry to inconvenience you," Puck snarls drowsily. He thinks that whatchamacallit may be starting to take effect.

If there was any doubt, the walls of the elevator now appear to be alight with purple flames.
