Katniss Everdeen, and Character Strength from Unexpected Sources

The promised essay for womenlovefest. Some of this is taken from comments I made at Mark Reads; a lot of it is new. HUGE GIANT SPOILERS for Mockingjay, so be warned.

Katniss Everdeen, and Character Strength from Unexpected Sources

Oh man, these are all the thoughts that I couldn't put to words in one succinct essay of badassness. Great, great job, and thank you for creating this.

And thank you for reading! (I will be rereading the trilogy with you, I think -- I reread bits here and there when I wrote this and flipped through to find the sections I knew I wanted to talk about, but I haven't done a full reread in at least a few months. Maybe longer. I should remedy that.)

Hallelujah and A-frakking-men! Thank you for writing this beautiful rebuttal of some of the things that have been said about Katniss. She is most definitely a strong character and people may not like her, but they sure should respect her.

Writing it felt so cathartic, I swear. I always grind my teeth a little when I hear people claim that Katniss doesn't get anything done and lacks agency, because it diminishes the significance of everything she does manage to accomplish -- in spite of a lot of formidable obstacles.

(And I'm sorry I haven't gotten around to responding earlier, as I was traveling a lot around that time, but thank you for your lovely comments on AO3! Reading them really made my day.)

All the victors are pretty amazing to hold themselves together after everything the Capitol throws at them, but Katniss is right there at the top, sometimes in spite of herself.

(OMG! It's you! I knew your name looked familiar, but I didn't make the connection with one of my favorite HG fanfic authors on AO3. :D Between you and Mithrigil, I've been a happy little fangirl. Now if only the movies would come out so I can vid them...)

Thank you so much for this post; it will inform and greatly improve my next reread of the series, which is probably going to be sooner than later. *g*
