Generally speaking, I loath turn-based combat, having experienced well-done real-time combat in FFXII, but if all you say is true, I may just decide to pick up Suikoden III again.  I'm also tempted by your description of destintive architecture, as that is what keeps me going back to Ivalice.  (I love the pseudo-Rajput look of Rabanastre and Bhujerba.  I hope I am just as impressed with Suikoden.
