And now I've played Suikoden I!
I was going to do more than one reaction post on it, but it's a pretty short game -- my playthrough was only 25 hours or so, and that's with me recruiting all the Stars of Destiny.
So you know how I complained about how long it took III and V to get the plot rolling? Here's how Suikoden I does it:
(
Do I need to spoiler-cut for a game that's almost twenty years old? Enh, might as well be safe. )

Do, do, there's an event called marksofstars going on right now that's 108 days of Suikoden fanworks and discussion, so now's a good time! Plus I want more people to talk to about this series.
And Mith just wrote Vik/Flik porn so basically I love everything right now~

Oh, yeah, my friend is running that and I considered doing it, but I get so uncomfortable and self concious writing fic- it's why I hardly do it even in my main fandom. lol I feel paranoid in discussions, too, because while I have played the first 3 multiple times, it's been awhile and I've forgotten a lot! lol
Oh my, that sounds glorious and wonderful and I don't think I saw this, but now I need it in my life.

I liked what they did with Barbarosa quite a lot; glad to hear I'm not the only one! Also seconding the 'wanting to murder Milich bit'.
Hope you enjoy Suiko II; I'll be looking forward to seeing your comments on it!

I'm going to try not to save all my thoughts on II for the very end, because I have enough thoughts just from what I've played so far to make a pretty substantial post. Granted, those thoughts are mostly Viktor and Flik aaaah ♥ ♥ ♥ and Jowy Jowy JOWY and jfc, nothing good happens to anyone in this game ever, does it, but it's got my favorite opening of any of the games and I'm really digging the integration of gameplay and story so far.

I agree that Scarlet Moon Empire wasn't a nation that you feel invested in. I feel more invested with Suikoden 2's Jowston area.
Suikoden 1 may not be my number UNO game (II is), but it's the game that started my Suikoden love, so it holds a special place in my heart, something I cannot say the same about Suikoden 3, unfortunately.

I feel a lot more invested in Jowston, too. It helps that you spend a lot more time in all the cities and get to form connections with the people there. And each area so far has had a very distinctive feel, particularly Greenhill and Matilda.
I ended up really enjoying 3, but it took a while for the game to suck me in the way 2 and 3 and 5 did. (Luc's chapter at the end was what made me fall for the game the most, honestly.) It helped that I played 3 before I played 1 or 2, so the changes to the series didn't seem as drastic. Also, I'm a shameless Nash fangirl, and I adored Chris from the beginning.

. . . Though I do like Geddoe and his posse, especially Jacques (why the translator not just call him JACK to fit the card naming scheme is beyond me!!!)
Oh, and yeah, I definitely felt invested with Greenhill (minus Nina). The part where Teresa sees that the town was with her always makes me cry, LOL.
Matilda on the other hand . . .Gorudo just ruins that town for me. Damn bastard, hahaha!

Geddoe's posse ended up being my favorites by the end. There aren't enough thirtysomething wisecracking mercenary groups in JRPGs, dammit, and there need to be more.
Me too. Poor Teresa. I wanted someone to explain to her that while giving herself up to spare her town would probably be a reasonable course of action in any other game, it's a really bad idea when you're dealing with Luca Blight. Because Luca Blight will kill everyone anyway. (Augh, Nina. I felt so bad for Flik, even when I was laughing at his distress. When he talked about how he had someone he loved who was 'always with him,' though, I teared up. Flik and Odessa give me so many feelings. ;_ ( ... )
