That's fortunate, because I have a bunch of them, as is evident. :D Seriously, though, it's not as bad as I was afraid it would be, though I admittedly came in with pretty low expectations.
It's a test of patience, to put it kindly. I could handle a ridiculously high random encounter rate, or a monotonous-as-hell overworld map, or the world's worst steering (well, maybe not the last), but all three in combination make me want to set the world map on fire.
It may not show, considering how sparse my own comments tend to be on games I play, but I love lengthy RPG ramblings like this!
I think coming in with low expectations was probably for the better in this case, because Suikoden IV's not terrible, but it's not as good as the others. I think it's usually preferable for something to turn out better than you expected, rather than worse. ^^;
This was the first Suikoden game I had anticipation built up for (I played I, III, and then II, in that order, starting around the time III was released), so, inevitably, I had been excited for it and then felt let down. (this reminds me of a not-terribly-interesting doodle I titled "the wreck of Suikoden IV's potential")
Yes, that describes it well! All three is just too much (I think I found the terrible steering the hardest to tolerate- your description of it being like "a cow in a shopping cart" made me laugh).

But just reading about the terrible sailing and controlling the ship is frustrating!! Argh, that was some really awful gameplay there! XD;
