Canon: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Timeline: Canon, at the end of Timeline 3

History: Up until about a month ago, Madoka Kaname had lived a relatively ordinary life.

She grew up with loving, interested parents. Her mother, Junko, is a businesswoman with a lot of ambition; her father, Tomohisa, is a homemaker and hobby gardener. Her little brother Tatsuya joined the family three years ago, and Madoka gets along with him well, despite him being a typical toddler and occasionally being a handful.

While not particularly outstanding at anything, Madoka is a hard-working student if a little bit of a daydreamer, and has a group of close friends-Sayaka, who is energetic and outgoing, and Hitomi, who is graceful and refined. The three of them have been friends from a young age and are quite close. Well… were, anyway.

About a month ago, Madoka met a very odd sort of creature who called himself Kyuubey and said he was a “messenger of magic” who could contract girls to become magical girls in exchange for a single wish. As a magical girl, Madoka would be required to fight evil witches that sought to bring curses upon humanity. Madoka, who had been looking for something to bolster her self-confidence and make herself feel less useless, jumped at the chance, and used her wish to save a cat that was about to be run over by a car.

As a magical girl, she gained a certain amount of confidence as well as even more friends, such as cool upperclassman Mami Tomoe. However, it turned out the new transfer student to their class, Homura Akemi, was also a magical girl, and came with a dire warning-that as magical girls, they would eventually turn into witches and die, which had been Madoka’s fate in a previous timeline from which Homura had supposedly come.

The other girls were skeptical at first; after all, it was a far-fetched story and why would they believe an unproven newcomer? But Madoka was less sure, and advised at least some caution. And one day it was proven true; Sayaka, who had also become a magical girl, overdrew the power of her soul gem and became a witch. The other girls were forced to kill her; then, Mami, driven to madness by learning her likely eventual fate, turned her weapons on their ally Kyoko, and attempted to kill Homura when she was stopped by Madoka shooting out her soul gem, killing her.

At that point, Madoka wanted to give up, but Homura promised her that they’d fight the coming Walpurgis Night, a very powerful witch, together, and save Mitakihara.

They did, at the cost of their own lives. Both of their soul gems were on the brink of being completely darkened. Madoka, however, had saved the grief seed Sayaka’s witch had left behind, and used it to cleanse Homura’s soul gem, since she knew that Homura could turn back time and stop this outcome, to stop her from being deceived by Kyuubey.

Her last request: she didn’t want to become a witch. Homura killed her herself, turned back the month, and continued onward. And that Madoka died.

And then she woke up in a strange place…

Personality: Madoka has grown up in a loving, caring family that taught her the values of responsibility and hard work. She looks up to her mother, who is a confident career woman, and helps take care of the house and her little brother, who had just turned four. There is probably not an unkind bone in her body. Her parents emphasized strength of character in her upbringing, raising her to value doing the right thing, telling the truth, and helping others.

Like many girls her age, Madoka’s still trying to figure out her place in the universe, and thinks that her peers already have things figured out when really they’re just as confused as she is. She’s also, naturally, a little insecure; she doesn’t have something that really gives her confidence. Becoming a magical girl did that for her-it’s something that she turned out to naturally be very good at, and it gives her something to strive for.

She is, however, unusually level-headed for a girl her age; while she will go out of her way to help her friends and put herself in danger for them, it’s not unmeditated danger; she doesn’t jump to conclusions, gives people the benefit of the doubt, and thinks before she acts. While she’s been known to make decisions a little rashly on rare occasions-for example, in her original contract as a magical girl, to save a cat about to get run over by a car-she had already been thinking about it, and would have made a contract anyway, as she is desperately looking for a purpose in life that will let her help others and figured she might as well use it for that. In the final timeline, she doesn’t contract to save Mami or Sayaka, while those would be obvious choices-she waits, because she realizes it’s not something she should do lightly.

On the whole, she’s a sweet, kind girl with self-esteem problems who is still trying to figure herself out and just happens to be entangled in the web of fate.

Powers & Abilities: Madoka Kaname was a Puella Magi, and has a certain number of abilities granted her. She is extraordinarily resilient and athletic while transformed; she can manifest a magical bow and shoot beam arrows. (She’s pretty good at archery; it goes with the territory.) Her magic is powered by her soul gem, which is to say, um, her soul, and basically when that runs out she flips out and becomes a crazy non-euclidean monstrosity that wants to devour the world.

On the other hand, she might or might not be dead, and that has some strange implications for the state of her soul and therefore her powers. I’d really be totally okay with her being more or less a normal girl. (I’d also be okay with crazy magical girl powers making a resurgence at some later date for plot purposes, idk.)

Third-Person Sample:
The first thing Madoka Kaname registers is the black and white creature nudging her awake. The second thing is-

-why is she alive? Espectially after she asked Homura-chan to-

But this isn’t Mitakihara. The sky is clear and blue, and while she’s still lying in a pool of water, it’s clear, clean water, and she’s surrounded by trees and grass rather than the ruins of her city. The white and black… dog? is whining at her slightly, looking a little expectant.

Is this heaven? Is she dreaming?

She hears something move behind her, like the swishing of a tail, but all she manages to catch a glimpse of as she turns around is a flash of pink.

“Ah-is someone… is someone there?”

There’s no answer, no sound but the lapping of the water. The dog (it still doesn’t look like any dog she’s ever seen, but she doesn’t have a better name for it) nudges gently at her leg again. She looks down.

“You’re… not here for me, are you?” No, of course not, that would be silly, and it can’t possibly understand her-

It sits up straight, at attention, as if having understood her words. Madoka takes a half-step back in surprise. But so far it seems harmless. “Um, um… I guess… do you have a name?”

A quizzical tilt of its head. (Her, maybe. There’s something that says her about the creature.) Madoka smiles, with only a little nervousness. “Well, I can’t go around calling you… I don’t know what I’d call you, I guess…” Her mouth turns downward, thoughtfully. “Hm, hm… Kitty, maybe? That’s kind of cute…”

She gives a slight incline of her head, as if in agreement, or at least acceptance, and then tilts her head sideways. Madoka almost bends down to scritch her behind the ears like she would Amy, but then notices that Kitty is pointing her to something else she hadn’t noticed before-a pink and light yellow bag sitting next to her on the ground.

“What’s this…”

First-Person Sample:
Um, sorry if this is a weird question, but… ah, I feel so silly asking this…

[The camera turns to a poorly-made campfire. There’s a pot of what probably used to be soup on it that is giving off black smoke, and a rather agitated Absol in the background. The pink-haired girl who is the speaker looks a bit sheepish.]

Eheh… I guess my cooking still hasn’t improved. If anyone has any advice on this, I’d really appreciate it.

Anything else?
