Cocoa Puffs?!?!

Warning, this will be a long, (and perhaps over-protective) parenting rant.

Today I dropped our little one off at her pre-school and she sat down for breakfast with a cup of the organic milk we bring in (needed a doctor's note to allow this) and what is she served with it?  A banana (great!) and a handful of cocoa puffs!  I couldn't believe it!  I  ( Read more... )

I can't believe they serve those! They usually have on rotation at our place: waffle or pancake, cereal (crispix, kix, cheerios are what I've seen), bagel with cream cheese, english muffin with egg. Fruit is served at all breakfasts, and milk too. They don't give the kids juice. Every now and then they have muffins, but it's not even once a week and they generally have blueberries in them so I think that's ok. Afternoon snacks I think they get more non-nutritional things but they're like...goldfish crackers and stuff like that, not sugary things. You're given a form where you check off what they kid can/can't have and ALL of it's pretty nutritional. You can even ask that they leave off the jelly/jam/syrup.

If all the kids get to eat at home are sugar things, then at school they damn well better be getting healthy things! Irresponsible! You are right to be outraged.

(I was really surprised at how low in sugar kix are, I bought some for her at home after I checked it out.)

The new place we are looking at (on the waiting list for) is certified and gets the highest rating. It would be great if they would offer her a spot for May, as otherwise she will have to transfer to a new room at her current school and then possibly make another move.

Thanks. Sometimes I think I am being irrationally protective, but I guess that is sometimes a parent's job.
