Idno, Italy is so much worse and nobody is doing anything (ahah, country of Ignorance) so maybe I'm jaded. There's no goverment support for ANY student (there has never been) and the Minister of Education under Berlusconi just recently halved the funds for public schools, causing pretty much all the shit my university is going through.

I guess protesting works, since you are used to much better conditions... nobody would even dream of asking for support for unemployed students over here. D:

Oh Berlusconi, you dumbass you.

I think it's a matter of ideology because we as a country is smack in the middle of socialism and liberalism.
Ever since the 60's we've had a welfare state that meant the state and the people co-depend on each other to a longer extend than most countries (we pay 45% in taxes, they give us benefits and financial support, etc)
our system would collapse if one party neglected to pay up, and our dear little prime minister is far too busy drooling over his own paycheck to see this.

to change just this point would change the whole social structure and families would have to save up so their kids can get a proper education WHILE paying fortysomething % in taxes.
