Great essay. Unfortunately, it's clear that there are quite a few folks in this country who think that "relatable" "stupid enough to not be intimidating" is more important. I'm with you. I want someone whom I'd have to say "Can you break that down for me?" to be running this country.
I mean, I get it. When I see a TV show, or watch a movie, or read someone's journal where a person admits they don't always get economics, or they also secretly love Cheetos, or that sometimes acting the fool is really fun, or whatever, I can relate. I exhale a little and say, Oh thank GOD there's someone else! I'm not alone!
It's a powerful feeling, especially if you suspect that you might not be super smart, or if you secretly think it kind of sucks that you've never been out of the country.
But that's what your friends are for. That's what celebrities are for. If I can relate to the leaders of the free world, I want it to be because we both like ice cream or dogs or whatever. When it comes to economics or foreign policy I think they should intimidate me a little. I shouldn't think I could read a little Wikipedia, and take on Palin myself in tonight's debate.
Well, you know that I'm agreeing, and am gonna watch pretty anxiously tonight. May it be obvious to even the simplest of masses that she is made of fail.
The biggest challenge of the night will be if Biden can kick her ass without Republicans thinking he's some kind of smug asshole, or big ol' meanie. The only thing worse than people thinking a stupid person is smart, is thinking that a smart person sucks because he's smug/a nerd/mean/whatever. You watch. Republicans are desperate to defend why they're voting with their party, they'll be saying all KINDS of nonsense after this debate is done.
I don't think it's strange at all that many Americans are still feeling insecure about what they don't understand, after living in a country that's been led, governed, and guide by fear for 8 years.
