At the risk of sounding like Linda Richman, I'd like to give you a topic to discuss among yourselves or at least comment on.

True or False: There is NO SUCH THING as a primetime, hour-long TV show that isn't about addiction and/or daddy issues.

I say TRUE. Thoughts?

Does this include reality TV or just scripted shows?

I like this, I am thinking about it. Dexter was the first show to pop into my mind, because it has both in spaaaaaades.

Scripted.

And, yeah, Dexter doesn't even try to be metaphorical with it either.

Yeah, the show has become maaaaaaaaaaajor daddy issues this season, even moreso than the last.

I can't tell if there really are daddy issues everywhere, or I just see daddy issues everywhere. It's so Freudian!

I think they really are everywhere, I just can decide if it's because Hollywood writers are largely alcoholics/addicts with daddy issues, or if they're just out of ideas.

Hmmm. I'm thinking about shows like the L&O series, which routinely involve some of each, but not necessarily all of the time. Pretty much every other one I can thing of on currently on network TV (I don't have cable or dish) does involve one or both as fairly constant themes (medical dramas include lots of addiction-related stories, many romantic dramas include some daddy-issue stuff). Must think on more, though, and look at ABC, CBS, and NBC websites because I don't know all of the hour longs.

The key telling factor is not necessarily whether the weekly stories deal with addiction/daddy, but whether either are stories for any of the main characters. Like, on CSI, Warrick has a gambling addiction, Catherine has major daddy issues. Life features a female cop who's a recovering addict, and her daddy issues are a major story arc. I don't watch the L&O shows unless we're visiting Mac's parents (they seems to be what's on), but I'd be willing to bet they're there.

Then again, that's kind of why I was curious to see what y'all thought. No matter how I try, I can't watch everything.
