Books Every Child Should Read

This morning I encountered this article entitled 100 Books Every Child Should Read. I perused their list and thought, yeah. Decent list. But then I wondered, Where's Bunnicula? What about the oeuvres of Blume and Cleary? Maybe these books aren't masterpieces on par with Carroll & Dickens, but they, too, should be read! And no Wizard of Oz books ( Read more... )

I agree with you about 10,000%. Without Ramona, that list is nothing!

And where is The Giver??

I could say more but it would turn into a comment novel. Suffice it to say, I love children's lit.

No, they're not there, this is what I'm saying. No Shel Silverstein at all, actually. I feel like it's merely a good starting point, but it needs tons of tweaking.

I agree with the inclusion of TH White, but my favorite was The Once and Future King. I read a lot of bizarre books... I think that Catcher in the Rye should be required reading in high school but then again college reading and kid reading blurs in my head. Oh Oh OH! These! have to be included. They have very limited literary value, but I entirely credit them with my prediction for non-linear thought. I found D. H. Lawrence's The Rainbow in library WAY before I should have been reading it. In fact, let me withdrawal that in favor of Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash and and and - I was about to say something about Benjamin Hoff's The Tao of Pooh when I realized I'm not going to be able to relate to my nieces and nephew until after they get out of college... :-(

Not necessarily. I read a lot of that stuff, including the Tao of Pooh, in high school. Buy them the books you think they should read, when you think they're ready, and see how they like it! That's what I do.
