7.12. "You can't kill the future."
| The League of Extraordinary Gentleman
Mexico had been the most adventurous place Riley had ever holidayed in his life. Britain or the USA had always been the only places he had visited. Which was why, as he was standing in the bathroom of their Mexican resort suite brushing his teeth with bottled water, he found himself wondering what was so luxurious about it if you couldn’t even put the water in your mouth. His life had become meticulous enough as it was of late; this just seemed irritating, though better than the latter outcome of ending up with Traveller’s Diarrhoea for the duration of the stay.
He spat the toothpaste out into the sink and went to grab for the second bottle of water when he froze. Green eyes widened as he stared into the sink at the pink foam from his mouth. “Ohphit,” he mumbled, his yet to be rinsed out mouth causing the expletive to come out sounding like he was eating with his mouth full. Instead, he dropped the bottle back onto the vanity and grabbed the hand towel to wipe his lips with a realisation that his life was even more meticulous than he thought.
A new toothbrush for the trip had seemed like a good idea at the time. Something Riley-esque to think of, as he had prepared for the trip with no less than eight lists and extra checking of all their packing. He and Evie had bought matching toothbrushes before they left - hers red and his blue - and this was the first time he had used it. New and extra effective at cleaning teeth…
… and making gums bleed.
Blood.
A near panic bolted through him and he started to study his teeth in the mirror. Sure enough, enthusiastic brushing with a new toothbrush had let to some bleeding. Bleeding in his mouth. He kissed Evie with his mouth.
Now he couldn’t even kiss her until he could be confident the bleeding had stopped.
“Fuck!” he cursed loudly and pushed his hands through his hair. He was close to tears now, the frustration starting to bite him inside again. Something as simple as brushing his teeth had now become a danger zone. Was this ever going to stop?
With one look in the mirror, he knew the answer, plain and simple…
No.
