Durance and Mascarade

Last night was a great night of gaming. We got to try out a new game that Chris brought back from GenCon for me called Mascarade, which is a really interesting hidden role game by the designer of Citadels. Basically everyone has a role at the beginning of the game which is public and first, but then gets hidden. On your turn, you can do one of ( Read more... )

Edit: His [Frank's] other character was the Captain of the Marines within the colony, Dalker Waycox, who had vowed to never let his brother Gidner (Greg), a prisoner, come to harm.

Great game, lots of fun dramatic moments :). I'm impressed with how quickly the characters and relationships came together. Fiasco does that well too, but this seemed even quicker somehow. Also an excellent moment -- we randomly rolled names for most of the characters, which is how the Dimber Damber and his son came to be related (Croffin). They even rolled similar first names! Wilton vs. Will (which we shortened to Wil and claimed was actually short for Wilton Jr.).

Mascarade was a blast, and I can't wait to play again. Matt left out how Jenni dominated three games in a row, including a HUGE fake out in the first game that had everyone wrong about who they thought she was. She "cheat"ed her way to two of the victories (the cheat being a role that allows you an easier win condition).

Made that change about Frank's character's oath in the actual post. That's a pretty important distinction.

Yeah, Jenni's play in that first game was genius in its simplicity. She started with the Cheat (lets you win if you have 10 coins instead of 13), and on her first move "swapped" with a facedown card in the middle that we knew was the Queen (gets you 2 coins per turn). Then every turn she'd claim to be the Queen and take two coins. No one switched with her or anything, and once she had 10 she claimed to be the Cheat. I called her out on it, certain that she wasn't the Cheat (if I hadn't called her on it she would have gotten the win condition and won the game regardless of who she was), and when she flipped the Cheat over and revealed that she'd never switched at the beginning of the game, our minds were blown.
