Last summer, I attempted to write a research paper on the rise of Modernism and France's role in that. Do you think their development of the camera led to them developing such fantastic films? (um.. that's not a very good question.)
Have you ever seen La Belle et La Bete?
One of the French professors at my school sometimes teaches a French film course. That would be really interesting to take.
i think that the development of all of their great films was really about the same as here, in that the youth - the filmschool firsts - were allowed to make movies. and i think that the choice by many (truffaut, renoir, godard) to make them cheaply-using smaller cameras and film stock-, on location, and with character-based action were what changed cinema.
i've never seen la belle et la bete. i shall check it out.
