How the hell do you get man ee goat out of manicotti?

I always thought is was pronounced similar to how it it was spelled. You know, typical Latin based language.

It's more like mon-ee-coat-ee, where italians sometimes make the "g" sound instead of a hard "c" -- but it's definitely NOT man-ii-cott-ee.
