I can't believe the government can take people's property and give it to private developers. This isn't something the government should be doing at all and goes far beyond the already uneasy acceptance of Eminent Domain. At least in that situation the government is taking it, not giving to some private contractor for development.
Don't think liberals are cheering this on. The NY Times doesn't represent everyone. Most good liberals would argue that this is a flagrant overextension of government power, especially when pointed out that the government is giving land to private organizations.
I agree with the ruling fully. The majority opinion emphasizes that it has to be part of a comprehensive economic development plan and the owners have to recieve just compensation. I think the public interest overruled the absolutist interpretation of property rights. This is on about the same level as taxation in terms of property rights.
As to the Iliad, read the Lattimore translation. It's what we use at Reed, and I know a few folks who have read both and conclude the Lattimore is much better.
