Intelligent Design?
Trying to furnish an apartment is a difficult task. I know the latest model of modern man is both equally programmed to stylishly design any interior and is probably also dishwasher-safe, but I was constructed before any of these advances and cannot even manage the interior design of my refrigerator ( Read more... )

The writing always makes me smile. Always. Love it, and I thank you for that.

You know where I shop for a lot of things in my apartment? Thrift stores. That sounds kind of grandmotherly, right? I'm not sure if that quite drops me into the toilet cozy category, but I dig it, anyway. I've snagged some really cool vintage tables for next to no cash at all. I have a coffee table that I'm pretty sure I'm madly in love with.

I've never stepped foot into an Ikea. I swear I'm from another time.

Thrift stores aren't grandmotherly! I thought they were cool, now that scampy teens with independent fashion streaks were purchasing outfits from there for non-Halloween-costume purposes. I know I do, though I also shop at Crombs all the time so I don't know what that says about my desire to stand apart. But, then again, I just can't keep up with the kids nowadays, so I have no idea if they have reverted to being popular with only the elderly.

But it's definitely okay not to have stepped into an Ikea. Those places are enormous; like, small Danish protectorate enormous. I bet they're planning a Trojan-horse attack on the United States and their footholds are Ikeas. One day, when we least expect it, someone'll press a button and in all Ikeas, the rows of inexpensive shelving units will pull back and from the ceilings will emerge fully-armed Dane-droids. Yes, the Danes, the least likely opponent, and how better could it unfold?

Isn't IKEA a swedish company?

I could easily develop a crush on you. Most of your posts are the highlight of my surfing day. Very few people have me reaching for a dictionary as often as you.

...nary a wall sconce in sight?

Who would have thought sconce would have four seperate meanings?

Stay away from Ikea, Pottery Barn leaves me a bit cold too. I'm not into furnature for the masses. Priority #1 is the bed, you need a new one, make haste.

Happy new year to you and happy shopping.

iawtc. The bed is very important, knowing my own spending habits, I would overspend. Those NASA foam things are heavenly!

Will make sure to develop a crush on you in the near future.

I've laid on those foam things, and they're wonderful for about a minute, but afterward it's like I'm laying in meringue that has totally firmed up. And as much as I like the idea of laying in a giant bed of meringue, it would likely not agree with my back.

Fracas. ♥

The OC Swap Meet has some deals on furniture. There are also some stores along La Cienega.

word on the fracas love. Unfortunately I cannot help you, as all the stores I'd point to are in Philly, and thus the money saved in purchase would be drained by shipping. Good luck, you funny, funny man.

Consequently, it is also the name of a very nice perfume!

I've seen some of these stores, I think; but I just figured that furniture stores in LA have a 1000000% mark-up because they're in LA and thus worth so much more because this up-and-not-coming design student nobody made this chair out of recycled hair clippings or whatever.

Do you have any specific recommendations? Otherwise I can just walk along the area with all the furniture stores and investigate. It's nice to hear that one area isn't limited to ridiculously overpriced furnishings, though.

The place where Paul (Mr. Frugal but it has to be perfect) bought his large sofa and loveseat for $650 is on La Cienega. Here's their website. There's a bunch of discount furniture stores down below the Beverly center and above the 10. And trust me, we shopped EVERYWHERE when we were looking.

Such is his journal!

Really, I understand his plight. I travel for work, temporarily re-locating, and FUCKING CHRIST getting adequate furniture is a pain.

I'm having problems getting like, mediocre to substandard furniture. It's like this computer "desk" that my father lovingly bought for me at Target for like, $40 because it was the only one around and he didn't want to spend more than ten minutes in Target was designed, qutie literally, to NOT sit level, in which case I made it correctly.

I feel like I always get a sneaking urge to check the back, and find that it was right on the cusp of collapsing in like a house of large wooden maple-facade cards.

I'm about to invest in cinder blocks and boards, I'll put it that way.
