Old English, derived from the Old English elements æðel "noble" and þryð "might" or "strength". Modern form of ÆÐELÞRYÐ or Aethelthryth, name of a 6th century saint. Saint Etheldreda (Audrey), Queen of Ely and Northumbria, nun and patron saint of Cambridge University. Also a Shakespearian character in his comedy "As You Like It".
