I went into Powell Library today to do my Stats HW because the book is on reservce there (thankfully, so I don't have to buy my 3rd Stats book). However, I didn't know the HW assignment, so I sat down at one of the computers to look it up. He may be crazy, but his punctuation and grammar are almost spotless. That's gotta count for something.

I'm sad he has since taken down his other journals, but this does answer a few of the lingering questions. So, he did in fact suffer from mental illeness, where he was, (at the very least) in his mind, living as a fugitive.
