Today I read in the Hartford Courant an article about a new driving law. Starting October 1st, all 16 and 17 year olds (regardless of when they started driving), are no longer allowed to be on the road between 12:01 AM and 5:00 AM.

Now honestly, what does this solve? Few people are on the road at that time anyway, at least from what I've seen, ( Read more... )

I'm glad the state legislators are using their time and our tax dollars to pass more laws that will be ignored by everybody.

Two really important points. I'm 87% sure the police can't pull you over on these "you can't be under age X" laws unless you're doing something else worth pulling over (which could include broken tailight, etc). So, if you're driving at 1:04 and a cop sees you, he can't just pull you over because he looks young.

Secondly: There is another new law as well. Also starting Oct 1, drivers under the age of 18 will not be allowed to use a cellphone (except in case of emergency) while operating a motor vehicle. This will be perfect for when a policeman pulls you over ("ITS AN EMERGENCY!"). Those over the age of 18 will be required to use hands-free devices while driving.

I think I trust myself on the road at 1:04 just fine. It's everyone else that I don't trust.

Also, I agree with Colby.

Oh, Mr. Hotchkiss made a really good point in class last week. He was talking about how the administration doesn't enforce most of the rules. Like the threat to tow if you parked in a not-your space never got followed through on. If they'd towed everybody two days in a row, there would be no more parking issue. They want to make the dress code stricter; what is that going to do if they don't already enforce what they have? You want people to listen to the rules? Don't make stupid ones and then not enforce them, because people will start to ignore everything.
