That tool for opening blister packs already exists. It's sewing scissors - the very expensive and tough scissors one buys at a sewing shop (or in craft section of other shops, though you have to be careful not to buy the poor cousins).

In the interim, soak your fingers in a warm bath containing epsom salts and arnica. Don't suck your thumb afterwards.

Some people recommend using a can opener (presumably the rotary type). I haven't tried it myself, but I think it sounds like a good idea!

Forget what Monissa said. You do want whatever is inside to be intact. Get something sharp and punch a hole. Then snip.
