It happened seventeen years ago, from my point of you. Cosmos, the goddess of harmony, and Chaos, the god of discord, were at war. To fight it, they needed champions. Squall and I were both summoned to Cosmos' side.
...It makes sense, from what I've heard of that particular period. Between that, and the fact that three of us remember different events, he had quite a few reasons to feel wary.
Perhaps he would have remembered he could open up to others without fear, over time. Pokémon battles and frequent contet with you might have been enough to help him recall that.
