1 and a half years left for a possible facist america

opinion all my own.

President Bush has signed into effect the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive, which in effect would make the Executive Branch the end-all be-all for power in the nation in the case of a "catastrophe" and allows those powers to remain active until the "catastrophe" is over.

so, not only do we have an unending war situation, but it's possible, through creative thinking, for the administration to stumble upon an unending catastrophe that would enable the current administration to perpetuate it's reign as long as it can get away with it, and if the war and catastrophe are bad enough, more stringent fascism can be put into place by augmenting current laws and regulations to allow for things like regulations that allow for any and all dissidents to be classified as traitors and enemy insurgents and even more stringent travel regulations, not to mention erosion of free speech protection.

i'm scared.  i'm hoping i'm overreacting, and i'd like to believe that we'd never let anything like that happen in America because we've spent so much of our life as a country fighting against oppressive regimes and totalitarianism and because the nature of an american is rebellion, but the last 6 years or so have taught me that people much prefer safety in ideology and safety in thought and safety in action over freedom in all things.

This country was founded on rebellion in the face of tyrannical oppression, and to think that we've made a complete u-turn in ideals in a scant 230 years or so troubles me.

To question authority is American.  To rebel, divine.
