"Not her," Jake said with a shake of his head when he realised who Caroline was talking about. "Just another version of her. That's Alice, she did the decorations probably, no way Bella thought of any of this."

Caroline frowned up at Jake and hissed in hopes no one would hear, "You never told me someone from your world lived across the hall? What the hell?"

"Oh," he blinked because he hadn't. "I guess. I just tried to forget she was there." Which was strangely easy despite the whole being in the same classes from time to time. "It was easiest."

"Well I guess you're lucky she's not from this universe because I totally would've been quieter if I'd known..." So embarrassing, really. "So who else should I know? Or are we hiding from people who might want to talk to you?"

As they watched Jake and Bella wander off into the shadows, Caroline had some choice thoughts about how she was the complete mirror opposite of this girl, but she somehow managed not to flip out at anyone about it.

It helped that Edward's cold hand took hers and they set to participate in some almost formal dancing. "So, where do I sign up to have that mind-reading power of yours? That seems way more useful than compulsion any day."

"It gets old quickly," Edward assured her, smiling at another guest as he moved them in a circle. "Bella is the only person I've ever not been able to hear." And leaving her to talk with Jacob was a little painful, but Edward was determined to let her have a moment with her friend.

Oh, now Caroline maybe saw the appeal. Even if she didn't get it with Jake. "So you like a little mystery after what, a couple hundred years?" He kind of reminded her of the Salvatore brothers salivating after Elena because her parents died. Also because he danced in a very old fashioned style.

"Bella is special," Edward said, a little quirk to his lips as Caroline's thoughts were too interesting to ignore. "She's a good person, it's not that surprising he likes her. They have a lot in common. And she's not an orphan."
