This. I think it has to do with a bunch of things though, really. A couple years back when it was us and a lot of people we all knew on ff.net, we were...not in competition with each other, but we did hold each other to a pretty high standard, IMHO. I saw stuff that you and Shades and Starhorse were putting out, and I wanted to improve my quality that much more (though my mileage did vary). So I guess we're a bit hipster. We were in the tf scene before the movies came out, so our stuff was generated more from the older verses ( ... )

This exactly. The first part and the pre-movie early days. It was the same for me. I'd be reading your stuff and Shades' and Starhorse's and Nightwind's and all these peoples' fics and thinking, "well shit, they're good. Time to up my game a little more."

That's missing now I feel.

Now it's just about trying to out-kink the other guy. Which, fine. Write what you want. But as a reader, I'm just here going, "aw c'mon, another one?"

Hipsters unite indeed.
I'm plotting something, if that helps.

Plotting is good! Thank you for the compliments on the No Longer Mourn series. While there's stuff I'd change if I had to do it again, I dunno if I could actually write it from scratch now. And that's kind of depressing. I haven't done anything longer than one shots in so long, I dunno how to do longer things anymore. NvN needs to get done, but I'm afraid of it just turning into a bunch of one-shots.

Wish there was a way to get all the old crew back together again and try to get that back. Thankfully many of us are still here on LJ, along with newer(ish) way awesome people like playswithworms.

What say you, hipsters? Would we be able to write for each other again?

Getting the old-ish crew back together? Well what do you think I'm plotting? Hehehehe

Well, I pretty much said what I thought on Twitter, so there's not much left. In fact, I'm deleting my original response, because I just had the worst weekend ever, and all I need to do is start any interwebz dramaz.

So, hugs to you for posting this. You know I feel the same way.

Totally.
Porn isn't everything - and sex is only a small fraction of the series. (totally fan-based, I think, except for a few established pairings, which might be part of the appeal for many readers and writers).

I'm willing to write a fic, if you have a prompt. Going through the Bunny Farm has left me with two conglomerate bunnies in my head space - and I can't get either written down. Which is sad, cause there's lots of unwanted bunnies begging for good homes or to be noticed.

It is definitely time for a change.
And I guess, writing a one-shot, or snippet, when I don't have anything else, will be my start.

Thank you for kicking me into action, instead of being a sheep. (here's hoping the jolt lasts long enough for one of the gigantic bunnies to be in electronic form instead of just random joules of brain energy)

totally feel you on trying to kick-start the bunnies.

That's the other thing I've noticed I guess about the lack of reading material variety lately - there's nothing to really give you a kick by way of sparking ideas while reading someone else's story.

Time was, as in mine and Tirya's posts, before 2007, when there was only a small group of us writing, we'd read each other's stuff and, I wouldn't say try to out-do the other, but more try to match or surpass the awesomeness. It kept us on our toes, if that's the right phrase to use... and it kept us writing.

I'd love to see what you come up with. I'm always looking for new and interesting reads and I don't believe I've read any of your work, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do! :)

The problem is you're trying to jump into a fandom that has had many of its veterans vying for other pastures and most of the new people came into scene from the kink meme, and thus are used to the immediate response, good or bad, it gets ( ... )

Trying to jump into the fandom? Veji, I've been around this fandom for at least 10 years now. I'm not exactly a newbie or so ignorant as to how the trends work around here. I'm fully aware of the influx coming in primarily because of ships and pairings and what have you, and of the older folks slowly dropping out. Believe me, I've seen a lot come and go ( ... )

You took a break, were focused on something else for a while, fandom went deeper into porn town in that time, so you are jumping back into the fandom that is different from what you were used to ( ... )

I took a break. Didn't mean I completely broke off from watching what was being produced in the fandom/franchise.

Thing is, what I found out from people who spoke up after this post... a lot of the old gang, yes they've gotten on with RL, but they're also still around. Some have come back with new stuff. Some are still writing.

They're just not posting anything because, from what I've heard, they feel there's no point in it since the general vibe going around is that people now only want to read porn, so why bother posting anything else only to have it buried?

and I get what they're saying. It's hard to come up with new stuff to write when there's very little to read that's going to motivate you.

well, if a kick in the aft is what it takes to get something moving... sigh... why is it always me?

Trouble is, you already know that fandom changes. Sticky is now quite prominent in a lot of the fandom. As are pairings comms. The only comms that are really active, are the kink meme and pairing comms. Comms like mecha_erotica that were around when I was new in fandom have fallen by the wayside and become mostly inactive.
wicked3659 points out, a lot of the smutty fic is well received. Plus, it seems now that if you write the 'wrong' pairings, or the unpopular ones you don't get read. Or, if you get read, you don't get reviews. And we all know that all writers love feedback.
