At Boscov's (my mom's job): 42" Panasonic Plasma HDTV for $1k. I'd get her discount for another 100 dollars off, at least.
Normal retail price: $1500- $1600.

Also, is Plasma still considered to be crap compared to LCD?

Do you NEED another TV? That's a month and a half's rent.

Plasmas and LCD are basically the same. Plasmas still are effected by burn-in, though. But I'd get it for that deal if you need a TV. Do you have an HDTV now? If not, do it.

I got a 62" Sony 3-panel LCD in the basement and it's ideal for gaming. The biggest gripe I have about plasmas outside of the cost is the weight. Plasma TV's are friggin' HEAVY. Those were a bitch and a half to put into dude's car back when I worked at The Great Indoors. The LCD in my basement, on the other hand...if it weren't so big, I could definitely lift it by myself. So mobility is a big plus if you go the LCD route. Both are nice though, and remember that Black Friday is also coming up pretty soon. ;)

I didn't read the other comments, but I do enough tech podcast listening to give you a decent, albeit-you-should-still-research idea:

Find out when it was made. Modern plasmas (aka later generation) are often BETTER than LCDs for response time and definitely on black levels. Black levels on most LCDs leave a lot to be desired in my opinion, and I'm not even very anal.

So, if it's recent - Go for it.

That's something I am going to do in the future as well. Since you know I do a LOT of gaming, I need a tv that's going to be able to handle it without fear of burn ins.
