Canon: Harry Potter.
Character: Tom Marvolo Riddle // Lord Voldemort.
Timeline: Directly after the creation of his first Horcrux, at the age of 16.
Personality: "You will hear many of his Death Eaters claiming that they are in his confidence, that they alone are close to him, even understand him. They are deluded. Lord Voldemort has never had a friend, nor do I believe that he has ever wanted one." - Albus Dumbledore.
should be. Always there with a helpful hand and a smile, Tom is the favorite of many a Hogwarts professor and has a flock of loyal students at his beck and call. Few argue with him, even fewer dislike him, and absolutely no one save for Albus Dumbledore knows what lies just beneath that attractive handsome surface: a monster, hungry for power and thirsty for immortality.
Tom, in actuality, could care less about everyone around him. He is a textbook sociopath - he does not have attachments to people and the only thing he has ever loved in his life is the school of Hogwarts. He is cruel, calculated, and cold - his entire life is spent conjuring ways to become stronger and more powerful. He fears little and likes even less. Everyone who claims they are his “friend” is sorely mistaken, as Tom is a very skilled and careful manipulator. Should Tom spend any time with you, he will know exactly how to twist you into his favor with a charming smile and a few manipulative words of flattery. He cares only about one thing: becoming someone. He kills indiscriminately and shows no remorse about his actions. He murders his own father, someone who he idolized until discovering his true identity, with no emotion whatsoever, only concerned with furthering his own goals and ambitions. He then blames the murder on his own uncle, one of his only surviving family members, who is sent to Azkaban to spend the rest of his life in insanity. He shows no remorse or guilt over these actions - it's simply another way to continue his plan towards greatness.
The most noteworthy item concerning Tom's personality is his fear of death. Death represents failure and, to Tom, failure is absolutely not acceptable. He is willing (and has, at the point of his canon) to kill in order to escape death. His greatest goal is to create enough Horcruxes to forever escape Death and he knows it is possible. Few people know of his goals and his Horcruxes, but those that do know that they are everything to Tom. The destruction of a piece of his soul means he is one step closer to death, something Tom refuses to accept and acknowledge. However, JK Rowling has stated that should Tom ever run into a boggart, a creature that transforms into what you fear the most, it would show Tom lying dead, the life gone out of him.
While Tom does not care about the people around him, many wizards (including Dumbledore and Harry) speculate that the only thing Tom ever cared about was Hogwarts. Hogwarts was the first (and only) home Tom Riddle ever received and Tom considers the school his place of work, his home, his livelihood, everything. He holds the school on a pedastal, unlike everything and everyone else in his life, which falls to the wayside. Hogwarts represents his past and the power he has to achieve in order to become the Dark Lord Voldemort. (Later on in life, Tom even hides one of his Horcruxes within the school, hidden deep in the Room of Requirement. He would not have done this if the school had not meant a great deal to him.)
So, in summary, Tom is a textbook sociopath that craves power and greatness above all other things. He has a pretty face and charming mannerisms, both of which he uses to his advantage in order to get what he wants. He will manipulate you and he will always succeed. Failure is not an option when it comes to Tom Marvolo Riddle.
Background: Tom Marvolo Riddle was born on December 31st 1926 to a dying woman and an absentee father. His mother was Merope Gaunt, a pureblood descendent of Slytherin who died shortly after childbirth. She lived long enough to name her only son - Tom Riddle after his Muggle-born father, who could care less about whatever child he had, with the middle name of Marvolo, after his pureblood grandfather, so he could never forget his heritage.
He never knew either of his parents and grew up in a seedy orphanage in the center of London. According to the caretaker of the orphanage, Tom was an odd baby. He rarely cried and was moderately well behaved, but as he got older, odd things began to happen around him. Bad things would happen to other children and pets - Mrs Cole, the caretaker, uses the example of finding a dead rabbit in one of the rooms, clearly tortured. No one ever fessed up to the act, but all of the children seemed to know that it was Tom who had done it. The older he grew, the more Tom seemed to separate himself from the other children. He seemed to care very little for the children around him and tormented those who made fun of him. He also liked collecting things of worth, ranging from a harmonica to loose change that he stole from the other children to be hidden away, pilfered, only to be seen by his own eyes.
He spent many years at the orphanage until September of 1938, when Albus Dumbledore found him in the orphanage to tell him that he was a wizard and that he was going to leave the orphanage to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Tom's life changed forever and, despite the odd child's presence, Dumbledore allowed him entrance into Armando Dippet's school.
Tom flourished at Hogwarts, sorted into the house of Slytherin. He became a model student, excelling in all classes, and gaining many friends and favors through professors due to his charming mannerisms, his good looks, and his need to please.
While at Hogwarts, Tom becomes possessed with a need to discover which (or both) of his parents were wizards. He is determined to discover how amazing his father is, idealizing him inside his mind as a powerful wizard, which is why Tom is so talented. In going through records, Tom discovers two things: 1) No man by the name of 'Riddle' ever attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but 2) A man by the name of 'Marvolo Gaunt' did. Tom discovers he is a half-blood - his mother, Merope Gaunt, was an heiress to the founder Salazar Slytherin himself, making Tom Marvolo Riddle the last living heir of Salazar Slytherin. His father, Tom discovers, is a Muggle. Bereft with anger that his father is not the man Tom idealized him to be, he latches onto the idea that he is the heir of Slytherin. By the age of thirteen, Tom discovers the legend of Slytherin's Chamber of Secrets (a chamber that houses a great monster within, a monster that noly the heir of Slytherin can control) and becomes determined to locate it and open it.
Life continues on at Hogwarts for Tom. During his fifth year, he is made a prefect for Slytherin, due to his model student status. Near the end of his fifth year, around May, Tom finds the Chamber of Secrets, at long last, and releases the monster within to sic it on the school. The monster is a basilisk, a creature that Tom can control due to his knowledge of parseltongue, the language of snakes. Later that same May, a Ravenclaw by the name of Myrtle is killed by looking into the eyes of the basilisk. There are rumors of shutting down the school, which Tom absolutely cannot allow... so, on June 13th, of his fifth year, Tom frames Rubeus Hagrid for the murder of Myrtle, claiming that his pet acromantula, Aragog, committed the act. Hagrid is expelled from Hogwarts and Tom escapes narrowly with his innocence. He is given a Special Service Award to the school, but at the cost of Albus Dumbledore's trust. The professor never quite trusted Tom after that incident.
July later that year, Tom visits his uncle, Morfin Gaunt, and steals Marvolo's ring and frames Morfin for the murders of the Muggles of the Riddle home, which Tom himself commits later that evening. It's up to much debate on whether or not this act of patricide is chalked up to revenge or Tom simply proving himself to be a more powerful man than Tom Riddle Sr: either way, Tom murdered his fatehr without remorse, blaming his only surviving relative on his mother's side for it, sending Morfin to Azkaban and sending his Muggle relatives to the grave. He returned to Hogwarts without guilt or fear of being caught.
Later this year, around September, Tom meets with Professor Slughorn to ask him about Horcruxes. He is shown wearing the ring that he stole from Morfin during the summer, as a trophy for his murders, and when confronting Slughorn, he receives the information he needs (or, perhaps,t he information needed to reinforce what he has already found) about how to split his soul and create a Horcrux. Between the months of September and before his 17th birthday on December 31st, Tom Marvolo Riddle creates his very first Horcrux - a diary, preserving his sixteen year old self, with instructions on how to open the Chamber of Secret once again. It's after his creation of the first Horcrux that Tom is brought into Adstringendum.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Tom is proficient in most
all of these spells and he is a model student. He excels in every subject that he takes, thanks to a quick grasp on most everything he tackles. He was a favorite student of Professor Slughorn, a proud member of the Slug Club, speaking to his talent in the art of potion making. Every professor sang his praises...but above all else, Tom has a special penchant for the Dark Arts. By the age he is now, he has killed, and will kill again. He has mastered the use of the Unforgiveable Curses and he is very talented with modifying memories, as proven by how he framed Morfin Gaunt for the murder of Tom Riddle Senior.
Tom is also a proficient Legilimens. Legilimency is the ability to delve into a wizard's mind and extract whatever information necessary. Legilimency is one of Tom's best and greatest talents; he does not require the incantation to delve into someone's mind, though he is still working on perfecting the art, and can almost always tell when someone is lying to him because of this talent. There is some debate on whether or not the art of Legilimency is a restricted art, monitored by the Ministry, but it is safe to assume that it isn't a frequently practiced art. It also isn't standard curriculum at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - so it is safe to assume that Tom mastered this art by himself, through his own tutelage, without much assistance other than books and his own talents.
Tom is also fairly skilled at Occlumency, the art of keeping people out of his mind, but he isn't as good an Occlumens as he is a Legilimens. However, if someone attempted to invade his mind, he would be able to know, and he would know how to fight them off. How successful he would be depends on how talented the invader is. (Note: Fandom-wise, it's assumed that Tom is relatively talented at Occlumency, as Dumbledore is a skilled Legilimens, and Tom managed to keep up his double-life at Hogwarts without much suspicion or concrete proof that could be used by the professor to get him expelled. It makes a great deal of sense that Tom would study both equally, but be more skilled at one versus the other, as canon characters tend to be more skilled at one over the other. For example, Severus Snape is a very skilled Occlumens, but requires the incantation in order to practice Legilimency. Tom, on the other hand, is a very skilled Legilimens, but his Occlumency could use some work.)
Tom also has the knowledge on how to make a Horcrux - and has made a Horcrux in his own timeline at Hogwarts. A Horcrux is a magical item that has concealed within it a piece of soul from the creator. This can only be created by splitting the soul by committing a murder - Tom, in murdering his father and his father's family, split his soul to conceal a piece of it within his school diary, intending to hide the diary away with instructions on how to open the Chamber of Secrets within Hogwarts. The more you split your soul, the more hollow your appearance becomes. As Tom has only split his soul once, he looks relatively normal and little difference can be seen.
On top of this, Tom is a Parselmouth. He can communicate with snakes and control them with a few choice words. He has very precise control of them, shown by his control of the basilisk within the Chamber of Secrets. They do his bidding, though Tom does not let this fact of his talent go lightly - the talent holds great prejudice, as not very many people like or understand Salazar Slytherin's greatness.
