I'm currently reading Neil Stephenson's Quicksilver, and it's great. Convoluted, complicated, lots of characters, but very, very funny in a very dry way which has piqued my interest. It's set in 18th Century England mainly and is about the rise of the Enlightenment and the Royal Society, it has both fictional and non-fictional characters and has a very slight undertone of fantasy/SF about it. I don't know how it ends yet, but I don't think it will be in a depressing fashion.

Whitby! I remember going there in 2005. 'Twas only for a day, but it was a lovely (albeit insanely touristy) little town.

Hmmmm books that won't make you cry. 'Fraid I can't help you there, a lot of the books I've loved lately have been kind of sad. =P
